This is the Abbotsford Board of Education's first meeting of the 2025-2026 school year. Agendas and minutes from the public Board Meetings can be accessed through the District's Electronic School Board. Below is a summary of highlights from the meeting.
Vice-Principal Janet Beattie shared how Blue Jay Elementary is fostering a love of reading through its Balanced Literacy Initiative, using UFLI to teach phonemic awareness and phonics in engaging, systematic ways. This work is helping students grow their literacy skills and become confident, capable readers and writers.
Principal Ian Levings and two W.A. Fraser students shared how the school’s leadership programs provide a wide range of clubs and opportunities across many interest areas, giving students multiple pathways to explore leadership. These experiences help students discover their passions, develop core competencies, and ultimately equip them with the tools they need to achieve success in their life and career goals.
Superintendent Dr. Ngieng presented the 2025-2026 School Startup Report.
Superintendent Dr. Ngieng presented the 2025 Framework for Enhancing Student Learning (FESL) Report to the board for approval. Motion was carried to approve the report in compliance with the Ministry policy.
The Summer Learning Leadership Team shared highlights, successes, and future considerations for summer school programs in the District. Principal Melanie Trudeau, Vice Principal Janet Bauer, and Principal Rovi Sandhu presented the Summer Explorers Program report. Principal Tom van Hunenstijn and Vice Principal Katie Caines presented the Secondary Summer School report.
Board of Education approved the schedule of ending financial reserves for the 2024-25 Audited Financial Statements and the 2025-26 beginning reserve balances for planning towards the 2025-26 AMENDED Budget as presented.
The Board approved the request from Skills Canada BC to co-sponsor the 2026 Skills Canada BC Competition Partners’ Luncheon to a maximum amount of $2,500.
Trustee Petersen provided a verbal report on his attendance at the Community, Culture and Environment Advisory Committee (City of Abbotsford) where staff presented on the Curbside Recycling Contamination/Remediation Plan Update.
Trustee White requested a notice of motion for an item to be added to the October public board meeting for discussion.
